SEO NELSON · TASMAN

Your Stall Is Packed on Saturday. Your Website Is Empty All Week.

Nelson runs on the Saturday Market — 200-plus stalls, everything grown or made within Nelson Tasman, the way it has run since the late 1970s. It’s a brilliant shopfront — for one morning a week. The visitor who met you at Montgomery Square searches your name on Tuesday from Wellington. The local who missed market day searches on Saturday night. What Google shows them in between decides whether Saturday’s reputation becomes the week’s income. We do SEO for Nelson and Tasman businesses that want the other six days covered: published prices, no lock-in, no percentage promises — and reporting measured on enquiries.

THE SIX OTHER DAYS

Between Market Days, People Search for the Person, Not the Product

Nelson’s economy buys on provenance: the maker, the operator, the studio, the guide. That doesn’t stop at the market gate — it moves online, where the same buyers research the place and the person before they buy. Three searches happen every week in this region:

The rediscovery search

“That jeweller from the market” — typed days later, often from another city. If your name search leads to a bare Facebook page and no website, Saturday’s best conversation evaporates by Tuesday.

The itinerary search

Abel Tasman walkers, Great Taste Trail riders and winter escapees plan trips weeks out — operators, stays and cafés are chosen from search and reviews long before anyone reaches Kaiteriteri.

The new-resident search

This region now grows only by migration — natural increase has been negative for three years. Every arrival needs a dentist, a builder, a vet, from a standing start: one search, no local knowledge, reviews decide.

THE TWIN-CENTRE BLUR

Two Councils. One Search Box.

Here’s the quirk nobody’s Nelson page mentions: the growth is not in Nelson. Richmond’s jobs have been growing at 4.7% a year against Nelson City’s 0.5%, and 61% of the region’s population growth over the past decade happened outside the city — Richmond, Wakefield, Brightwater, Māpua, the Waimea Plains. Yet customers don’t search by council. Someone in Stoke searches “Nelson”; someone in Nelson drives to Richmond without noticing a boundary. Your visibility has to be built on the continuum people actually live in — city reputation, Tasman growth — not on the line between two councils.

Nelson City

The name, the arts, the heritage — the Saturday Market, the studios and jewellers (the One Ring was made here), cafés, professional services, the port. Searches here are reputation- and story-led: the maker’s name, the gallery, the place with the reviews.

Richmond & Waimea

The growth engine — new roofs, new subdivisions, the mall that now pulls the region, trades and services booked solid serving households that didn’t exist five years ago. Searches here are need-led: who can do it, how soon, and what do the reviews say.

And Over the Hill Is Another Country

Golden Bay sits behind Tākaka Hill — one winding marble road that genuinely isolates it. Tākaka, Pōhara, Collingwood and the Farewell Spit run on their own search vocabulary (“Golden Bay”, “Tākaka”, never just “Nelson”), their own identity, and a median age over 50. A Golden Bay business folded into a generic Nelson page is invisible to its own customers — and a Nelson business claiming Golden Bay it doesn’t serve fools nobody who lives there. We treat it as its own market, because it is one.

In the Arts Capital, a Dated Website Contradicts the Product

Nelson sells craft at premium prices to people with an eye. A cluttered, dated site doesn’t just convert badly here — it argues against the work itself. Search brings the visitor; the page has to be worthy of the product when they arrive: fast, clean, photographed properly, with the maker’s story told in the maker’s words. Almost a quarter of this region is over 65 and health is now its biggest employer — considered, review-reading buyers with real money. Depth and clarity win them; clutter loses them before the first scroll.

What we actually do

Local SEO — profile, reviews and suburb coverage across the Nelson–Stoke–Richmond continuum.
SEO campaigns — maker and operator pages built for rediscovery and itinerary searches, plus ecommerce that sells between markets.
Technical & speed — because a slow page insults a craft product and a rural connection alike.

The Percentage Problem on Nelson's Loudest SEO Page

“83% of targeted keywords reaching Google’s first page within 6 months.”
Published on a Nelson SEO page by a Christchurch firm — two sections from its own FAQ admitting nobody can guarantee a #1 ranking. Percentages like this have no methodology behind them: which keywords, chosen by whom, measured where? Easy keywords hit page one; the ones that pay your rent are the contest. Ask for enquiries instead of percentages.

The “$600–1000” price range, with no period and no scope.
Per month? Per project? For what work? It is the only number on the loudest Nelson SEO page, and it answers nothing. Below it, the same page’s location copy talks about helping businesses “across Christchurch” — on the Nelson page. Templates travel; attention doesn’t.

Our contrast is boring, deliberately: prices with a period and a scope, a named monthly work list, reporting in enquiries — and this page written for Nelson, from Nelson research, like every city page on this site.

THE NUMBERS, UP FRONT

What Does SEO Cost in Nelson? A Price With a Period and a Scope

The loudest local number is a “$600–1000” range with no period attached; a Nelson directory lists agency time at $100–149 an hour; the rest is quote forms. Our plans are monthly, published, and the same as everywhere on this site. If a smaller scope is genuinely all you need, the free audit will say so — we would rather sell you less than pad a plan.

STRAIGHT ANSWERS

Nelson SEO Questions, Answered Plainly

Published, with us: $1,000, $2,000 or $3,500 a month depending on the plan, excl. GST, no lock-in. The published local alternatives answer a different question: a ‘$600–1000’ range with no period or scope on one Nelson page, and $100–149 an hour in a directory listing. Before comparing any two numbers, ask each provider the same three things — per what period, for what named work, reported how? Ours are on this page; hold everyone else to the same standard.

No. The firm whose Nelson page advertises ‘83% of targeted keywords on page one within six months’ says the same in its own FAQ — nobody can guarantee a ranking. Percentage claims hide the only question that matters: page one for which keywords, and did they produce enquiries? We report enquiries, calls and bookings, and we will show you the work list behind them every month.

If your customers live anywhere along the Nelson–Stoke–Richmond continuum, yes — they search both names interchangeably and drive across the boundary without thinking about it. The growth (new homes, new households) sits on the Richmond/Waimea side while the reputation sits in the city; a page strategy built on only one name leaks the other half of the same market.

Not properly. Over Tākaka Hill is a different market with its own search vocabulary — Golden Bay, Tākaka, Pōhara, Collingwood, Farewell Spit — and its own deliberate identity. Golden Bay businesses need visibility built for those searches, and Nelson businesses shouldn’t claim the Bay unless they genuinely serve it. We will build it as its own piece of work and price it as such.

Meaningful movement typically shows in 3–6 months, with stronger gains compounding over 6–12 — the honest band you’ll find on the better local pages too. The Nelson sharpening is seasonal: rankings built through winter are what the summer visitor economy finds, so starting a season earlier than feels necessary is usually the right call.

For a maker, search is the six days your stall is shut. The visitor who loved your work at Montgomery Square searches your name from home; if that search finds a proper site — story, range, online shop, stockists — Saturday’s admiration becomes Tuesday’s order. A complete Google profile alone (photos, hours, reviews) is the cheapest version of this; a small ecommerce build is the full one. Both beat being unfindable between markets.

Winter is the building season: only about 15% of this region’s visitor spend lands in winter, and the visitors who book Abel Tasman walks, trail rides and stays for summer are researching months ahead. Visibility started in spring arrives after the bookings are made. Build through the quiet months, and let reviews and a complete profile carry the in-season searches.

Judge on accountability, not postcode: a named human, published prices, everything in your name. For calibration, the loudest dedicated SEO presence in Nelson is a Christchurch firm’s location page whose own copy still talks about Christchurch. A page written about your city from research — like this one — tells you more about the work than an address does. Ask every provider to show you their city homework; we just showed you ours.
